Cars manufactured since 1996 have an on-board computer with an integrated system called OBD (On-Board Diagnostic). Vehicle sensors are connected to the OBD. When it detects out-of-range data or a malfunctioning sensor, it saves an error code and lights up an indicator on your dashboard, such as the “check engine” light.
The “check engine” light is a warning signal to let you know it’s time to bring your car to an auto repair shop to check it out.
